Bosnia and Herzegovina: ANIMALS HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIFE!

On December 5, 2013, the House of Representatives adopted a draft law on amendments to the Animal Protection and Welfare Act, which legalize euthanasia of all homeless animals in BiH if they are not adopted within 15 days in a shelter.

Now we are waiting for the final decision of the House of People. There is still possibility for the amendments to be voted against or changed. Veterinarians in BiH believe that animals HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIFE, and they are against euthanasia of healthy animals.

Please keep writing to BiH authorities and sign petitions. There is always hope! ANIMALS DO NOT HAVE VOICES, BUT THEY HAVE US!!!

SUBJECT: I zivotinje imaju pravo na zivot! / Animals have the right to life!

We have received very sad news that Bosnia and Herzegovina took a huge step backwards in terms of modern animal welfare! On the 58th session, the House of Representatives adopted a draft law on amendments to the Animal Protection and Welfare Act, proposed by Nermina Zaimovic-Uzunovic, which legalize euthanasia of all homeless animals if they are not adopted within 15 days in a shelter.

The 2009 Law of Animal Protection and Welfare was progressive legislation that if properly enforced would have seen a huge reduction in the number of stray dogs on streets in the most humane manner possible.

In addition, it's important to note that deliberate animal abuse is rife in Bosnia, and many international animal welfare organizations cite Bosnia as the country with the most instances of horrific animal cruelty. With these changes to the Animal Protection and Welfare Law, you certainly send the message that killing dogs and cats is acceptable in all circumstances in BiH.

We hope that the European Commission and the Parliament will discuss this matter with their Bosnia and Herzegovina counterparts. EU has the world’s highest standards of animal welfare and if Bosnia and Herzegovina wish to join EU, must takes
animal welfare seriously.

While the world is awaiting for the final decision of the House of People, you can still create a solution to this problem through better implementation of the current law and humane stray dog population control (Trap-Neuter-Return program, as only effective).

Please stop this amendment and start building a better future for the people and dogs of Bosnia.

Sincerely, with respect

YOUR NAME AND COUNTRY
